USDT TRC-20 vs ERC-20: fees, speed and which to use

USDT is the same dollar-pegged token on both networks, but the network you pick changes the fee, the speed, the wallet you need and what can go wrong. Here are the figures, with sources checked on 27 October 2026.

The short answer

TRC-20 and ERC-20 are two versions of the same USDT, one on Tron and one on Ethereum. On DubaiCrypt, TRC-20 usually confirms in about a minute and ERC-20 in one to three minutes. Fees have shifted: in October 2026 the Ethereum network fee for a USDT transfer was around one cent, while a Tron transfer that burns TRX cost about $2, so compare your exchange’s withdrawal fee for each network, then send on exactly the network you selected.

Same token, two networks

Tether issues USDT on several blockchains. Its list of supported protocols includes Ethereum, where USDT is an ERC-20 token, and Tron, where it is a TRC-20 token. ERC-20 and TRC-20 are simply the token standards of each network. One USDT is designed to be worth one US dollar on either, but the two versions live on separate blockchains and are not interchangeable. As Trust Wallet’s glossary warns, “sending TRC-20 USDT to an Ethereum (ERC-20) address — or vice versa — can result in permanent loss of funds.”

Everything that differs between them comes from the network underneath: how fast blocks are produced, how fees are calculated, which coin pays the fee, and which wallets and exchanges support it.

Where the numbers come from: the Tron figure is from the TRON community’s quarterly fee review for Q2 2026, which puts a standard USDT transfer at $2.14 when TRX is burned for Energy, at an average TRX price of $0.33; Tron cut its Energy price from 210 to 100 sun in August 2025. The Ethereum figure is our calculation from Etherscan’s gas tracker on 27 October 2026 (0.087 gwei, with ETH at about $2,353) and the 54,128 gas that Eco, citing Etherscan, gives for a USDT transfer; the 10-gwei example is Eco’s, at an ETH price of $2,694. The OKX withdrawal fees are as reported by Eco from OKX’s fee page on 6 October 2026.

Why “TRC-20 is always cheaper” needs a second look

For years TRC-20 was the obvious low-fee choice, and many wallet guides still describe Tron fees as “very low” and Ethereum fees as “higher”. That was true when Ethereum gas prices were high. In 2026, Etherscan readings cited by Eco in October, and our own check on 27 October, put an ERC-20 USDT transfer at one to two cents, while a Tron transfer still costs about $2 for a sender without Energy. Both can change quickly: Ethereum fees rise sharply when the network is busy. In practice, though, what most travellers pay is the exchange’s withdrawal fee, set per network by each exchange, so the cheaper option is whichever your exchange charges less for on the day.

Speed: what “confirmed” means

Tron’s developer documentation says its 27 Super Representatives take turns producing blocks in slots scheduled every 3 seconds; ethereum.org says Ethereum blocks are created and committed once every twelve seconds. Payment services wait for several blocks before treating a payment as final, which is why the practical times are longer than a single block. On DubaiCrypt, USDT on TRC-20 usually confirms in about a minute and USDT on ERC-20 in one to three minutes. Either fits comfortably in a normal checkout payment, as long as your exchange sends the withdrawal before the countdown on the payment screen ends.

Which exchanges and wallets support which network

Support is broad on both networks, but never assume it.

  • Large exchanges usually offer both. Binance’s withdrawal guide lists ERC20 and TRC20 among the common networks and asks you to choose one, and OKX publishes separate USDT withdrawal fees for Tron and Ethereum.
  • Some exchanges and apps support fewer networks, and the list can change. The networks available for USDT are shown on the withdrawal screen, and that screen is the only list that counts.
  • Self-custody wallets differ. Tron wallets such as TronLink hold TRC-20 tokens, Ethereum wallets such as MetaMask hold ERC-20 tokens, and multi-chain wallets hold both. Trust Wallet, for example, says it supports the Tron network and TRC-20 tokens among more than 100 blockchains.
  • In your own wallet you need the network’s gas token: TRX (or Energy) for a TRC-20 transfer, ETH for an ERC-20 transfer. An exchange handles this for you and charges its withdrawal fee instead.
Good to know

If your USDT sits on an exchange, compare its withdrawal fee for both networks before you start a payment. The difference can be larger than the network fee itself.

How to withdraw USDT on the right network

These steps follow the usual exchange flow, using Binance’s published guide as a reference; other exchanges use similar screens.

  1. On the DubaiCrypt payment screen, note the network you chose (TRC-20 or ERC-20) and copy the unique payment address. The amount is locked while you pay, as the countdown shows.
  2. In your exchange, open Withdraw and select USDT.
  3. Paste the address, then select the network that matches the payment screen. Binance says the network is usually detected from the address, but check it yourself: the networks must match on both sides.
  4. Enter the amount so that the full sum arrives. Binance distinguishes a “receive amount”, where the network fee is added on top, from a “withdrawal amount”, where it is deducted; use whichever delivers the exact amount due.
  5. Compare the first and last characters of the pasted address with the payment screen, then confirm with your two-factor code.
  6. Keep the transaction hash (TxID) that your exchange shows. It is your proof of payment.

If you send too little, too much or on the wrong network, the steps are on wrong network or amount. The whole flow, from paying at checkout to an instantly confirmed booking, is explained on how crypto payment works.

What happens if you choose the wrong network

Exchanges are blunt about it. Binance’s guide states: “If you select the wrong network, your funds might be lost and will not be able to be recovered.” Because a Tron address starts with “T” and an Ethereum address with “0x”, many exchanges reject an obvious mismatch. The more dangerous case is an Ethereum-style address used on another network: addresses starting with “0x” are also used by other networks, such as BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), so an exchange may accept the address and send the USDT on a network the payment screen did not ask for.

If it happens on DubaiCrypt, contact the concierge immediately with the transaction hash. Depending on the networks involved, recovery may be possible, but it is not guaranteed and can involve fees.

Good to know

Before you confirm any withdrawal, read three things back to yourself: the coin (USDT), the network (TRC-20 or ERC-20) and the first and last characters of the address.

USDT or Bitcoin for paying a Dubai stay?

DubaiCrypt prices are set in US dollars, so the coin you pay with mainly affects price stability, speed and fees.

Best ifYou already hold USDT, or want to know exactly what you pay in dollarsYou hold bitcoin and prefer not to convert it first

According to bitcoin.org, new Bitcoin blocks are added about every ten minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic, so the first confirmation can come sooner or later. That is why BTC payments take longer, although still well within a normal booking flow. The bigger practical difference is value: if your budget is in dollars, USDT avoids converting bitcoin first. Whichever coin you use, prices and any refund to your DubaiCrypt balance are kept in US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

Is USDT on TRC-20 the same as USDT on ERC-20?

It is the same token issued by Tether and designed to be worth one dollar on either network, but it sits on two separate blockchains. You cannot send one version to an address on the other network.

Which is cheaper in 2026, TRC-20 or ERC-20?

It depends on the day and on your exchange. On 27 October 2026, the Ethereum network fee for a USDT transfer was around one cent, while a Tron transfer that burns TRX cost about $2 at Q2 2026 prices. Exchange withdrawal fees differ by network and often matter more, so compare them on the withdrawal screen.

Do I need TRX or ETH to send USDT?

Only from your own wallet: TRX (or Energy) for TRC-20 and ETH for ERC-20. When you withdraw from an exchange, the exchange pays the network fee and charges its withdrawal fee instead.

Can I send TRC-20 USDT to an ERC-20 address?

No. The two versions are not interchangeable, and wallet providers and exchanges warn that sending on the wrong network can mean permanent loss.

What if I already sent USDT on the wrong network?

Contact the concierge at once with the transaction hash. Recovery may be possible depending on the networks involved, but it is not guaranteed.

Which USDT networks does DubaiCrypt accept?

Tron (TRC-20) and Ethereum (ERC-20) only. You can also pay in BTC or ETH at checkout: 4 options in all. The crypto amount is calculated at the live rate and locked while you pay.

How long does a USDT payment take to confirm?

On DubaiCrypt, usually about a minute on TRC-20 and one to three minutes on ERC-20. Your booking is then confirmed automatically as soon as the payment is confirmed on the blockchain.

Is USDT or Bitcoin better for paying a Dubai stay?

USDT is simpler if you think in dollars, because its value barely moves and it confirms quickly. Bitcoin works too and takes 10 to 30 minutes to confirm; it makes sense if you already hold BTC.
