Can I drive in Dubai as a visitor?
Which licence you need, minimum age, Salik tolls, speed limits and parking — the essentials for visitors.
Visitors can drive a rental car with a valid licence from one of the countries recognised by the UAE (including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, most EU countries and the GCC). Others need an International Driving Permit together with their licence. Always check the current list published by the UAE Ministry of Interior.
- Minimum age 21; rental companies usually ask for 25 for luxury and sports cars, and 30 for the most powerful models
- Speed limits are clearly signed and enforced by cameras
- Zero tolerance for alcohol
- Seat belts are compulsory for every passenger
Salik tolls
Toll gates are automatic. Since 31 January 2025, the toll varies by time of day (as reported in 2026: AED 6 at weekday peak hours, AED 4 off-peak and on Sundays, free from 1 to 6 am). Rental companies charge tolls at cost after your rental.
